Federal traffic computer centres
The state road building authorities operate traffic computer centres (VRZ) on behalf of the Federal Government which control traffic guidance systems on federal motorways. Under the leadership of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), the federal/state "Traffic Computer Centres" work group has developed a concept and corresponding documents for a basic concept of a standard, nationwide traffic computer centre.
This basic system which can be developed in a manufacturer-independent manner with a modular structure comprising standard interfaces between software units and a data distributor as the core component is planned for future traffic computer centres. This simplifies the subsequent integration of extensions and modifications in the existing software structure. A primary objective of the road building authorities here is to avoid manufacturer-related dependencies in terms of hardware and operating software. The selected modular structure enables numerous manufacturers to participate in the realization of the software and thereby concentrate on their respective core competencies. Another goal is the making of the completed software components available as open source software.
