Motorway guide sign information system (AIS)

The Motorway Guide Sign Information System is a graphic database owned by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development and maintained by the Federal Highway Research Institute.

This database documents traffic guidance signs on the German interstate road network including its main carriageways, linkage ramps as well as the signs on exit and access routes in the secondary network leading up to pre-highway signs (440 StVO).

The graphics comprise photos and videos. Image data are saved in JPEG format with a resolution of 768 x 576 pixels and 16.7 million colours. The database includes a control program for displaying and printing out image data. Images can be invoked by specifying the required highway number/direction, node name or a search expression. Once an image has been invoked, the highway network can be navigated - as during a real journey - by scrolling successively through the remaining images.

The database is sold on a CD. Because the image database is revised regularly, the CD can be updated correspondingly by copying the latest image data as well as related control and network data to the local hard-disk. The software program, too, is updated and cleared of errors on a regular basis.

No maintenance of the database at the moment.
