Digital Motorway Test Bed

Increasing traffic safety and traffic efficiency as well as reducing emissions are important goals of the Federal Government. To support these goals, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) together with the VDA, bitcom and the Free State of Bavaria initiated the Digital Motorway Test Bed (Ger.: Digitales Testfeld Autobahn (DTA)) in 2015. It is located on an approximately 140 km long section on the A9 between Nuremberg and Munich. In addition to further digital test fields in urban and rural areas, the DTA represents an optimal environment for innovative developments in the field of Connected and Automated Driving as well as Intelligent Infrastructure.

Concept and goals

The Digital Motorway Test Bed is intended to offer providers of innovative technologies, such as automated driving or intelligent infrastructure, the opportunity to develop and test these technologies in a real functional environment. With the combination of a modern road infrastructure and the availability of state-of-the-art communication technologies, such as complete coverage of LTE mobile network, a (section-wise) highprecision digital map or special signage for the positioning alignment of automated vehicles, it offers a unique test environment for the automotive industry, suppliers, telecommunications companies and research institutions.

In addition to objectives, such as supporting research and promoting innovation, the DTA is also intended to serve as a test environment for new infrastructure measures. Furthermore, by direct contact with everyday traffic the societal acceptance of new technologies is supposed to be increased. Thus, as a technology-open test area, the DTA is available to many stakeholders.

Areas

Thematically, the innovations at the DTA are assigned to two fields:

  • Connected and Automated Driving (CAD)
  • Intelligent Infrastructure

A major difference between the two fields is, in the CAD field tests and developments are primarily carried out directly by companies or research institutions. In the area of Intelligent Infrastructure, however, this is usually done jointly with the responsible motorway authorities and the BASt. Currently, the following measures in the field of intelligent infrastructure are being implemented or have already been completed:
