RITUN - Resilient Road Tunnels
Guidelines for improving the resilience of road tunnels
The German federal highways form the largest transport network for people and goods in Germany. They are an essential basis for our modern society and economic prosperity. Due to their connecting and shortening function, tunnels play a central role in ensuring the efficiency of the road transport network. Damage to or even the complete loss of critical tunnel structures due to disruptive events can result in high restoration costs with long downtimes and thus considerable economic damage. Therefore, the RITUN research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), investigated ways to improve the resilience of tunnels in order to contribute in a structured way to maintaining their availability and security.
Here you will find all the information and tools necessary for practical application to systematically improve the resilience of road tunnels. This includes, on the one hand, increasing the resilience of tunnels to external influences and, on the other hand, accelerating the return to full availability after an event occurs. Consideration is also given to the possibility of temporarily operating tunnels after an event while maintaining the required safety level, thus ensuring partial availability.
