Real travel time data optimises traffic planning

The collection of travel time data enables a realistic assessment of the service quality in traffic networks. However, depending on the data source used, different data bases and calculation methods result and thus different travel time data for identical traffic conditions of a connection. The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) therefore initiated the development of a concept with which travel time data from different sources can be assessed with regard to their statistical significance and which enables homogeneous statements about the traffic quality of a connection. The use of floating car data as a database also makes it possible to use the methodology to analyse deficiencies in the current situation. For example, to identify bottlenecks in the performance of individual connections in the motorway network during rush hour or to make deficits in the accessibility of individual locations visible during off-peak hours. The results of the project are to be discussed and, if appropriate, taken into account in an update of the Guidelines for Integrated Network Design (RIN, 2008).
