Safe automated driving on the motorway

The recognition of critical traffic situations is of paramount importance in the development of automated driving functions. However, a scene-based evaluation of different traffic sequences requires a precise description of a motorway journey that takes safety-relevant scenarios into account. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), a concept was developed that covers the entire driving task and describes the extraction of base scenarios from field data. On the way to automated driving, the present concept serves as a basic building block for further work. The results are of decisive importance in the development of a scenario database for the scientific investigation of the control suitability of automated driving functions. In the long term, this will create the prerequisites for statistically unbiased analyses. Essential development work has thus been done for the further development of safe automated driving.
