Minimising risk - safety assessment of road tunnels

The safety assessment of road tunnels has so far been carried out on the basis of specifications from 2009. However, the scientific and practical knowledge gained in recent years suggests that the methodology used should be adapted. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), adaptation proposals were developed on the basis of current data in order to further increase safety in road tunnels.

The results of the study show the importance of previously unconsidered parameters with regard to their risk influence. Hence, a future inclusion in risk analysis procedures seems reasonable and necessary. A timely implementation of the results in the regulations is therefore aimed for.
