Development of durable road pavements
To make road pavements durable, both bound and unbound layers are used for optimisation. In the case of asphalt and concrete pavements, base courses without binders (ToB) have proven their worth under high traffic loads. Since the load-bearing effect of the ToB becomes more important with decreasing thickness of the asphalt package, an application of the “Guidelines for the Calculational Dimensioning of Traffic Infrastructures with Asphalt Wearing Courses” (RDO Asphalt 09) to determine the condition of asphalt pavements on ToB seems reasonable even at low loads. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), the Gesellschaft für Wissens- und Technologietransfer (GWT-TUD), Dresden, investigated the required specifications. The non-linear elastic and plastic deformation behaviour of ToB in road pavements in relation to climatic conditions was to be taken into consideration.
