Applicability of V2X for Transit Signal Priority
Prioritization of public transport (PT) at signalized intersections is a practice used since the 1980s to reduce travel times, improve schedule adherence and increase the number of trips. Due to the planned restructuring of the frequency spectrum in analog radio, it will be necessary to adapt existing systems for communication between traffic signals and vehicles. On behalf of the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), a guideline for the use of the upcoming C2X communication standard for the prioritization of public traffic at signalized intersections was developed. The results prove that it is possible to use the C2X communication standard in practice. Because of the technical and organizational challenges that still have to be overcome, so-called hybrid operation appears to be useful as a transitional solution.
