Abrasion emissions from roads

When building new roads or expanding existing ones, it must be ensured that the best possible measures are taken to reduce pollutants. This also requires precise knowledge of the emission factors of road abrasions for the PM10 particle fraction. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), the abrasion behaviour of road surfaces commonly used in Germany was therefore investigated.

In the discussion about the traffic-related contribution to the pollution of the ambient air, the emission sources road surfaces, brakes and tyres will gain in importance in the future. The research results are therefore to be used as a supplement in other projects. In addition, consideration of the derived emission factors in the FGSV guidelines RLuS “Richtlinien zur Ermittlung der Luftqualität an Straßen ohne oder mit lockerer Randbebauung” (Guidelines for determining air quality on roads without or with loose peripheral development) is being discussed.
