Motorcycle: lean angle fear in critical situations

If an obstacle suddenly appears in a bend, many motorcyclists avoid sharper lean angles, even though this would allow them to avoid the dangerous situation. The result is a lane departure and possibly an accident. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), it was therefore investigated which lean angles are chosen in normal traffic and in scary situations.

The results on the driving behaviour of motorcyclists provide a good basis for future investigations. It can further be assumed that providers of motorbike safety training will incorporate the uncovered correlations between driving situations perceived as critical and the temporal course of the lean angle into their work.
