The TRAFFIC CLIMATE 2020

In a study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), the traffic climate in Germany in 2020 was recorded on the basis of a representative survey. This traffic climate survey, referred to as the baseline measurement, is the first measurement within the framework of continuous monitoring of the traffic climate. The traffic climate was recorded via the perception and evaluation of how road users interact with each other. In this study, the reliability of the application of a traffic climate scale is examined and possibilities of its use in research and practice are derived.

The traffic climate in Germany is rated neither particularly positively nor particularly negatively. Thus, these results do not confirm the impression often conveyed in public opinion that the traffic climate is bad. However, as the results show, there are clear regional differences in the assessment of the traffic climate. The present study provides a reliable, practicable instrument for assessing the traffic climate. It is recommended that this instrument also be taken into account in studies that focus on aspects of traffic culture and road safety culture.
