Pedestrian crossings at roundabouts and road sections

The aim of the SENIORWALK study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) is to expand the knowledge about the target group of older pedestrians, which has been neglected in research so far. In terms of content and methodology, this study ties in with the BASt’s SENIORLIFE study, which dealt with elderly car drivers.

This approach provides a suitable basis for deriving recommendations for the implementation of measures both for the overall group of elderly pedestrians and for different lifestyle groups.

The present results provide a comprehensive documentation of the problems, motives, expectations and attitudes associated with walking. This provides an important basis for the planning of communicative measures as well as - to a certain extent - for infrastructural changes, if it is known more precisely where the problem areas of elderly pedestrians lie.
