Long-term effectiveness of the ban on alcohol for novice drivers

Some 10 years after the introduction of the alcohol ban for novice drivers, the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) examined the long-term effectiveness of this measure. A re-evaluation showed a decrease in alcohol-related accidents and traffic offences. In addition, it was shown that road users for whom the zero-alcohol-alcohol-limit was applied as novice drivers, also participate less frequently in road traffic if they drink alcohol. The acceptance of the measure has steadily increased in recent years.

It is therefore important to maintain the legal measure as such and to continue to address the dangers and non-tolerance of driving under the influence of alcohol in the context of driving training and traffic education as well as information and education measures.
