Traffic safety of motorcycles

Motorcyclists have an increased risk of being involved in an accident compared to other road users. Moreover, the risk of suffering serious or even fatal injuries in a road accident is disproportionately high. The BASt therefore commissioned IVT Research GmbH, to carry out a study in which the mobility structures of motorbike traffic in Germany were to be presented. The simultaneous provision of the exposure data should also enable use in further accident analyses. In addition, a detailed presentation of the methodological principles of the traffic accident risk analysis should provide an overview of existing results on accident risks and causes of accidents in motorbike traffic.

The results of the study provide a good basis for a more in-depth examination of the topic of motorbikes in mobility surveys. In the long term, the results should also be incorporated into the corresponding guidelines on improving road safety on motorbike routes.
