Temperature controlled bridges

Road surfaces of bridges can be prone to premature icing if they are located in unfavourable locations such as in the proximity of water bodies. So far, an intensified winter road clearance service or de-icing agent spraying
systems have been available as counter measures, but these are considered ecologically questionable. Alternatively, the temperature of the road surface can be controlled by using geothermal energy. BASt therefore accompanied the construction project of the Berkenthin canal bridge, which has an integrated temperature control system. The aim was to gather experience during planning, implementation and operation and to document the benefits of the measure. The knowledge gained from the investigation forms a trend-setting basis for the temperature control of road surfaces in the road sector. In possible follow-up projects, especially in bridge construction, the derived construction recommendations should prove helpful.
