Field trial of new mobile sensors for the automatically controlled spreading of grit
Improved algorithms and mobile sensors are intended to help winter road maintenance services adjust the gritting density precisely to the current road condition. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), practical tests were carried out over 2 winter periods to optimise the technical conditions.
The introduction of assistance systems for the parameter-controlled determination of the optimum spreading density can be regarded as an important step to enable winter road maintenance to be carried out even more economically, safely and with minimum environmental impact in the future. The field tests carried out with the currently available technical means have revealed initial findings and solutions. However, further development of sensor technology is required to implement effective automatic de-icing salt spreading.
