Accident analysis of pedal electric cycles (Pedelecs) (4217008 und 4217014)
New technical developments, especially in the field of alternative drive technologies, have resulted in new types of mobility in recent years. This has enabled new users to switch to environmentally friendly means of transport. An example of this is the pedelec 25 (Pedal Electric Cycle), a two-wheeler that supports the user when pedalling with an electric motor. With this innovation, the two-wheeler gets attractive for additional user groups and increase the radius of activity compared to the conventional bicycle. However, little research has been done on accidents involving Pedelecs 25 so far. Until 2013, accidents involving bicycles and Pedelecs 25 were not explicitly differentiated in the official German accident statistics.
The aim of the project Structural analysis of pedelec 25- and bicycle accidents in Germany (4217014) is to provide a complete status report of accidents involving pedelecs 25 and conventional bicycles in Germany. For the first time, an analysis of the basic characteristics of accidents involving Pedelecs 25 and a comparison with the accident situation of conventional bicycles will be provided.
In addition to the characteristics of the official accident statistics, the police on-site record further information on the accident. This includes, among other things, a description of the of the accident as a free text and if necessary with a sketch. Thereby, the police can describe the sequence of events, possible accident causes not included in the accident cause catalogue, and other factors that may have an effect on the accident. The aim of the project Accident analysis of pedelecs (4217008) is to collect, systematise and analyse this information in order to identify special factors of accidents involving Pedelecs 25.
Road Accidents involving Motorcycles (4216013)
In 2014, the number of motorcycle accidents was four times higher than that of passenger cars per kilometre driven. Motorcyclists represent a group of especially vulnerable road users who travel at speeds similar to or higher than other motorists travelling in vehicles offering higher levels of passive protection. Overall, this results in a significantly higher risk of injury for motorcyclists in the case of an accident. Accordingly, the number of deaths per kilometre driven was ten times higher in 2014 than it was for car drivers. In all, motorcyclists accounted for 18.5 percent of all road accident fatalities in 2015. In addition, the accident and injury statistics have remained stubbornly high in the recent past. This is one of the reasons why – at the midpoint of the 2011 Road Safety Programme – road accidents involving motorcycles on secondary roads have been identified as one of the four key issues for the second half of the current Road Safety Programme. This project seeks to use official road accident statistics to analyse road accidents involving motorcycles. The project seeks to present current accident and injury patterns and to show how these have changed in recent years.
Traffic Accident Analysis on Individual Sections of German Motorway (4288004)
In order to identify sections of motorway which are particularly susceptible to road traffic accidents, it is necessary to analyse traffic accidents on individual sections of motorway – including a comparison of data over time. The analysis of accidents on individual sections of motorway constitutes the basis of the work undertaken by the Federal Government and the Länder on road traffic safety and fulfils their obligation to report to the EU on the safety of the roads in the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) updates these reports on an annual basis.
Alternative Drive Technologies: Market Penetration and Consequences (4288003)
In 2010, the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) initiated a long-term programme of observation covering both the motor vehicle market in – as well as road accidents involving – vehicles with alternative drive technology, with the aim of assessing the future development of vehicles with alternative drive systems in Germany. This study seeks to track the degree to which technological innovation is actually being implemented in marketable products, to gather information regarding developments affecting existing vehicles, and to identify any potential developmental shortcomings – especially with a view to road safety. It is primarily with respect to the latter consideration that this study seeks to formulate suggestions leading to sound management and development in this field.
Collection of Mileage Data – Coordination and Scientific Accompaniment (4213000)
The mileage of motor vehicles within a defined period on a defined road network within a defined period is a central parameter when it comes to describing motorised road traffic. Among others, the mileage serves as a reference value in order to determine and compare the safety level of various road user groups, the availment of the road infrastructure and as an indicator of traffic-related environmental burdens. Important mileage and traffic performance benchmark figures are constantly being determined and extrapolated by the BASt, DIW, KBA and the BAG. These calculations only cover certain sections or are based on earlier calculation models, the input variables of which having been acquired from earlier mileage data however. The last special mileage data were collected in 2002. The results from then are no longer up to date due to the changed prevailing demographic and traffic conditions so that a new comprehensive collection is to be made in 2014.
Section-specific accident analyses on federal motorways in 2009 and 2010 (4210013)
Section-specific accident analyses, including comparisons over time, are required to determine particularly dangerous motorway sections. Section-specific accident analyses are therefore an important element for the traffic safety work of the federal government and the federal states. It has now been attempted for the first time to provide section-specific analyses for the data years 2009 and 2010 using the BISStra system.
