Combination of augmented/mixed reality systems with other digital technologies (69.0008)
In building inspection, inspection personnel can be relieved of and supported in tasks that can be performed more easily through the use of digital technologies. The use of a combination of augmented/mixed reality (AR/MR) and artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning can support this process by, for example, automatically detecting damage during building inspections and providing information based on this. AR/MR offer, among other things, new possibilities for the visualisation of virtual content, the input and provision of information. Artificial intelligence technologies are used to detect and analyse damage to structures by training image capture data models. By combining this, the AI can process the data captured by the AR/MR system together with other available data as well as experience with past problems as far as possible in real time, recognise patterns and provide the human with evaluation results and suggested solutions based on this via the AR/MR system. The aim of this research project is to show the future development of AR/MR systems and their combination with other digital technologies as well as potential use cases for transport infrastructure.

Future development of a tool for indicator-based, cross-modal life cycle management of infrastructure structures (69.0007)
Efficient life cycle management of infrastructure structures should help to increase the service life of structures and minimise the necessary interventions in traffic. An essential core task for the future is the systematic modernisation of the structure stock, also under operation. This requires a move away from the current reactive maintenance management towards an integral, forward-looking and systematic approach. The possibilities of modern, innovative technologies should be used to act more cost-effectively and sustainably in the planning, control and management of structures and networks. New forms of data collection and processing help to identify and address deficiencies at an early stage. For example, the use of drones in the inspection of structures could significantly increase the efficiency of damage control. The aim of the project is to improve transport infrastructure management - moving away from reactive and preventive measures towards predictive, cognitive lifecycle management. Through the bundling of existing data and a cross-modal strategy, synergies are created that lead to the saving of resources and the increase of capacities.

Structural inspections using 3D building models and augmented/virtual reality (15.0666)
The aim of the project is to investigate a virtual structural model for an existing bridge and to merge the existing model data with structural data. Building on this, the project also aims to carry out structural inspections and condition assessments using virtual and augmented reality techniques. Finally, the systems based on virtual and augmented reality are to contribute to an optimized quality assurance in structural inspection, in which the provision of information is more efficient than before. It should be possible to include more, faster and more comprehensive information in order to support the making of well-founded decisions in structural inspection and condition assessment.

Development of a simplified verification format for the earthquake design of bridge structures in Germany (15.0651)
Most regions in Germany show little or no seismic activity, so that they usually play only a minor role in the design of support structures in Germany. In contrast to this, the extensive design regulations for structures under seismic loads are contained in Eurocode 8, which has not yet been introduced in Germany. These documents contain complex and detailed verification formats and design regulations that appear to be justified in areas of high seismic activity, but would not be required to the same extent for application in the weak earthquake areas of Germany. In order to take this circumstance into account and to reduce the calculation and design effort for the load case "earthquake" to a necessary level, a multi-stage concept for the dimensioning or structural design of bridge structures for the different earthquake zones in Germany shall be developed.

Network of Experts: further development of non-destructive testing methods for applications in bridges and structural technology (2416022)
Non-destructive testing methods in construction engineering (ZfPBau-Verfahren) are also becoming increasingly important in bridges and structural technology. There are numerous test tasks, however, for which no adequate ZfPBau solution exists. Within this project, new ZfPBau-driven approaches for a non-destructive assessment of the structural condition are therefore to be tested, broken down into individual sub-tasks.

Network of experts: validation of non-destructive testing methods for bridge and structural engineering applications (2416013)
Non-destructive testing methods in construction engineering (ZfPBau methods) are becoming ever more important in bridge and structural engineering. Further studies, especially into quality assured application, are needed for these methods to become more firmly anchored in practical use. Suitable methods of evaluating quality are to be conducted for issues such as thickness measurements, detection of cracks parallel to the surface or of gravel pockets. The aim here is to survey and assess the entire test process comprising test method, equipment, test procedure and implementation by test personnel. This project will produce information about the reliability of ZfPBau methods for the testing methods examined, engineering plans for reference objects and advice concerning the production of reference errors that can be used to validate the methods and also for training, vocational training and certification. It will moreover establish test instructions for quality assured application of the test methods that can subsequently be transferred to the relevant rules and standards.

Network of experts: reliability of existing bridges (2416011)
Future research activities will focus on issues concerning the reliability of road traffic infrastructure. This also includes reliability-based or risk-based approaches to determine and assess condition and for maintenance management, as well as aspects of load-bearing capability, safety and functionality. The first step will be to research common, recognised target reliability levels to be used for comparison purposes. The second step must establish how the reliability of individual components, such as bridges or tunnels, may be determined in conjunction with each other in the network or on entire sections of roads. This will present opportunities with varying degrees of complexity and expense depending on type, size and age.

Network of experts: future viability of traffic load models (2416012)
For years, heavy goods traffic has been growing steadily and relentlessly in terms of volume and weight. This includes the exponential rise in heavy goods vehicles subject to approval. This trend is likely to have an impact both on the design and dimensioning of new bridges and on existing bridges. As such, action is needed with respect to the future viability of traffic load models. In particular, the fatigue load model under DlN EN 1991-2 for new structures and the traffic load models to be used to recalculate existing bridges must be examined, adapted or completely redeveloped.

Determination of relevant parameters using NDT methods for demolition bridge structures in federal trunk roads (2411017)
Non-destructive testing methods in civil engineering (NDT construction methods) can deliver valuable information within the framework of an object-oriented failure analysis (OSA). In order to test and further improve the performance capacity of NTD construction methods in terms of these testing requirements and practical conditions, several studies on demolition structures have already been conducted successfully and documented. A systematic analysis and summary of the results of the NDT construction studies of demolition structures in the form of an evaluated procedure catalogue is appropriate. This way, the federal road authorities are supported in the commissioning and selection of suitable test methods within the frame work of the OSA. In addition, information is available, as to how suitable NDT processes/ applications can minimise off-time and effort and expenses for the implementation of the testing.
