Working at BASt since 2002

Why BASt?

I became aware of BASt when researching for my master's thesis on subsequent reinforcement of road bridges. I later applied for a temporary two-year vacancy in the field of road engineering / dimensioning of road constructions. I was attracted especially by the fact that it was a project work on interesting large-scale test series, in which I could make use of my knowledge in the areas of structural mechanics, construction materials and measurement technology. The road construction technology posed a new challenge, which enabled me to acquire new knowledge, and to perform interdisciplinary work. The BASt project work is interesting because one is constantly faced with new challenges, as it is far away from standard tasks.

My first fixed-term employment was followed by a contract for another four years. I got a permanent contract in 2008. I was made civil servant three years later.

Tasks and activities with BASt

My duties are primarily planning, execution and evaluation of research projects in the field of road construction technology. In addition, support of external research projects, and participation in national and international bodies, as well as publications and knowledge management, also at a national and international level.

Support from BASt

In the team work, which is an important part of a project work, we - that is, the colleagues in the department - support each other. I receive support also from the superiors and from the administration, particularly in training and participation in workshops and conferences at international level. I was prepared for international activities through language courses and training in presentation and communication techniques.

For me, working at international level is a very important and interesting aspect. I felt particularly encouraged and supported in this regard by my two-month stay in Melbourne, with the Australian Road Research Board, the ARRB Group. Exchange with international engineers and scientists is a big enrichment to your own work.
