Why BASt?

As a civil engineer with specialist knowledge in tunnel engineering, I based my decision to go to BASt on three aspects: On the one hand, BASt, more than any other institution, offers the unique opportunity to be active scientifically and practically at the same time; on the other hand, it also offers the opportunity to develop the research yourself, and to participate actively in the implementation of the research results in practice. In addition, the safe place of work with a variety of development opportunities is also another aspect which must not be ignored. I could experience this every day during my nearly 14 years of working for BASt.

Tasks and activities with BASt

As head of the department of tunnel and foundation engineering, tunnel operation, and of the newly established research field of civil security, I could work with success, both nationally and internationally, on many interesting projects, together with colleagues in the department, without losing sight of the practice.

The path to professorship

BASt promotes doctorates and teaching at universities. Through the many years of teaching during my time with BASt, I had an increasing interest to pass my knowledge on to the students. I got the chance, to perform this “sideline job” on a full-time basis. I am now a professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster. I would never want to do without the time I spent with BASt, because the "training" with BASt helps me a lot with my current tasks.
