Test facilities

Bicycle simulator

With a bicycle simulator, driving tests can be carried out in a virtual environment. Investigations of the influence of age, illness, fatigue, distraction or psychoactive substances on the behaviour of cyclists are only some of many possible applications. In addition, the bicycle simulator can be used to investigate effects of changing environmental conditions on perception and behaviour of cyclists – for example after road construction changes or due to the introduction of highly automated vehicles. more ...: Bicycle simulator …

Driving simulator

With a driving simulator, driving tests can be made in a virtual environment. The Federal Highway Research Institute performs various studies with the driving simulator, for example, on the impact of age, illness, fatigue, distraction or psychoactive substances on the driver. Furthermore, the impact of changes in road structure on driver perception and behaviour can be studied prior to any construction being carried out. In addition, driving simulators can be used for the training of driving skills. more ...: Driving simulator …

Facility for active vehicle safety and driver assistance

Vehicles require periodical technical inspection (PTI) for safety and environmental reasons. BASt has installed a complete test facility in one of its test halls to handle scientific research projects relating to this issue. The test facility consists of a roller brake tester (including wheel load scale), track angle tester, headlight adjustment and scissor lift with a capacity of 3.5 tonnes, including an integrated axle play detector and jack for releasing the axles. more ...: Facility for active vehicle safety and driver assistance …

Lab for acoustic scale model technology

To reduce costs, traffic obstructions and lengthy examinations BASt uses this lab for investigations and measurements using models of the traffic structures and the residential structures surrounding them which are as little as a twentieth of the original size. more ...: Lab for acoustic scale model technology …

Mobile load simulator MLS30

Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) facilities are being established around the world for the execution of accelerated and realistic load tests on pavement structures. In most cases, these tests are being conducted through the use of a rolling wheel load for load application. more ...: Mobile load simulator MLS30 …

SMART-DECK

The durability of road bridges made of strengthened concrete is endangered in particular by chlorides seeping into the concrete due to damaged waterproofing, joints and transition profiles. Corrosive damage to the reinforcement steel usually only becomes visible on the upper side of a bridge once a substantial amount of damage has already been done. Furthermore, the higher volume of traffic on some bridges is leading to deficits in terms of their shear force and flexural load-bearing capacity in transverse direction. more ...: SMART-DECK …

Turntable road-marking test system (RPA)

Seeing and being seen are important preconditions for safety on the road. The latter particularly applies to road markings which can be considered as an essential element of visual guidance for the road user. Motorists (including motorcyclists), in particular, must be able to trust these road markings, both in the daytime and at night – and particularly in wet conditions. more ...: Turntable road-marking test system (RPA) …
