Architecture of Intelligent Transport Systems and Mobility Services

Foto zeigt das RAIM Logo

Intelligent Mobility Services are data-based applications in the domain of transport and mobility which use data and systems of different mobility actors and thereby generate added value for its users.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and services based on them form today an important technological and organisational basis for new mobility services in a wide range of applications in the road transport sector. The challenge caused by the involvement of different actors is often the necessary consistency of information as well as the cooperation of the different involved actors.

In order to integrate existing ITS as well as to facilitate the implementation of new intelligent mobility services, the architecture framework for intelligent mobility services (German abbreviation RAIM) has been developed on behalf of BASt. In addition to the framework, also three reference architectures were created in a four-part research project for the service categories “Traffic information in private transport”, “Cross-competence traffic management” and “Multimodal travel information”.

As introduction to the application of RAIM, a planning guide was created, which leads through the most important process steps of the development of an architecture for an intelligent mobility service. In addition to that, a software tool (based on Sparx Systems’ Enterprise Architect) and an ITS architecture wiki are provided for elaborated usage and support of RAIM.

Available documents via the electronic BASt archive (ELBA), english versions of the documentsas annex:

  • RAIM Architecture Framework for Intelligent Mobility Services:

    • A framework for the development of ITS architectures
    • A planning guide for the effective design of intelligent mobility services (only in German)
  • Reference architectures, based on RAIM:

    • Traffic information in private transport
    • Cross-competence traffic management
    • Multimodal travel information
    • City2Navigation: Linking situational municipal traffic control with third-party routing and navigation systems to improve use of existing urban road capacity (annex 2 of C2N final report – only in German)

The subject architectures for Intelligent Transport Systems is advanced by BASt for many years. First preliminary work at FGSV led to the document “Notes on structuring a framework architecture for Intelligent Trasport Systems (ITS) in Germany – Necessity and Methodology”. Building on this, the development of an ITS framework architecture was adopted to the ITS Action Plan ‘Road’ of the BMVI. BASt was given the task to put the measure into practice which led the the activities described above. For the future, the challenge will be to maintain the framework and to inspire potential users as well as to support them in the use of RAIM and thus receive new inspirations.
