Noise Tests

Individual noise level reductions specified for motor vehicles in statutory regulations do not necessarily lower the general road traffic noise level. A new noise test accounting for operating conditions prevailing in municipal traffic zones is planned to lower noise emissions of new vehicles in future. This is expected to distinctly reduce noise pollution for the affected population.

Operational data acquired from a wide variety of vehicles under different traffic conditions also led to a proposal for modifying the conditions concerning test measurements of noise emitted by two-wheeled and three-wheeled motor vehicles (ECE R41). This proposal is along the lines of the ISO/CD 362 standard developed as part of ISO TC 43/SC/WG42N.

The noise test proposed in the standard is more detailed than the previous test in terms of procedure and speed measurement accuracy. However, the practicability of this noise test still needs to be verified for motorcycles. The Federal Highway Research Institute conducts independent measurements to examine the feasibility of the proposed method and determines new limiting values for it.
