Automotive Engineering

Automotive engineering makes a major contribution to increasing safety in road traffic. The aim of active vehicle safety is the prevention of accidents. Today's state of the art technology is represented in vehicles, which automatically brake to prevent impending rear-end collisions. The first cars already exist that in certain cases can even prevent accidents with pedestrians. Other technical innovations will help to further raise road safety in the future. These are designed to provide support to the driver if the vehicle gets into a critical situation. Good sight and visibility are key aspects of safe participation in road traffic.

The goal of passive vehicle safety is to prevent or reduce the incidence of injuries in the event of an accident. The research work undertaken by the BASt provides significant contributions to improving vehicle safety standards for the protection of vehicle passengers as well as pedestrians and cyclists. The BASt is active in the key statutory committees for passive vehicle safety, within which UN guidelines and worldwide directives are prepared. In addition, the BASt is also involved both as the representative of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (German abbreviation BMVBS) in the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) consortium and as a recognised testing laboratory.

New communications and information technologies enable ever more complex traffic management systems to be realised. Cooperative traffic and driver assistance systems should assist in improving traffic safety and making full use of the existing capacities of the road traffic system. The BASt supports the different individual developments, while not only the technical but also the organisational and legal framework must be simultaneously provided for the purpose of integrating all partial solutions into one overall system. The interests of people may not be neglected in this process.

The tyre represents the link between the vehicle and the road surface. The BASt deals with all issues relating to tyre safety and the effect of tyres on the environment. Here a key role is also played by acoustic engineering measures relating to the vehicle, the road surface as well as sound propagation.

In addition, vehicle exhaust emissions also represent a major factor in the area of environmental protection. In this regard, the maximum permitted levels of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, hydrocarbons and particles are being gradually tightened. With the TREMOD emissions calculation model, the BASt has established a system to forecast the development of the energy consumption and exhaust emissions in Germany up to 2030.
