UVa - Universidad de Valladolid

Spain

The University of Valladolid (UVA) was founded in the 13th century, and the Faculty of Medicine is one of the oldest. Since the early 80's the Faculty of Medicine and in particular, the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Institute of Alcohol and Drug Studies, has been involved in road safety and Traffic Medicine, in co-operation with the National Traffic Agency (Dirección General de Tráfico). At present, Valladolid’s Faculty of Medicine is one of the most active in this field in Spain, mainly in applied research and in the development of road-safety policies. Initially the activity focused on psychoactive medication, but progressively it extended to Traffic Medicine in general. Regarding medication UVa has conducted several research projects on patterns of medicinal drugs use among drivers, and UVa has also developed a categorisation system and guidelines for medicinal drugs prescription to drivers. UVa has paid special attention to training. For example, a nation wide course on 'prevention and assistance in road accidents' for about 5,000 general practitioners has been recently implemented, while current activities include continuous training for about 2,000 medical practitioners working in road traffic medical psychological centres.
