The University of Groningen was founded in 1614. It is the second oldest and third largest (over 20,000 students, more than 5,000 staff members) University in the Netherlands. The University offers more than 50 study programmes.

The University hosts interdisciplinary research on environmental and traffic psychology within the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The research carried out focuses on the behavioural and social aspects of traffic, transport, mobility and environment. Contract partners include the Ministry of Transport, the Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, the Ministry of Justice, private industry both national and abroad, and last but not least the European Commission. Topics of research are aspects of traffic and travel behaviour that can be investigated with models and methods from experimental, social, developmental and educational psychology.
