RUGPha - University of Groningen, Department of Pharmacotherapy and Pharmaceutical Care

Netherlands

At the University Centre for Pharmacy both fundamental and applied research on drugs is being conducted. The field of Pharmacy is heavily interlocked with the fields of Biology, Chemistry and Medicine; this is reflected in the broad spectrum of academical and professional backgrounds of research group members. All research groups at the University Centre have an extensive record of participating in national and international research projects. These collaborations not only involve academic parties but governmental and industrial ones as well.

The Department of Pharmacotherapy and Pharmaceutical Care is performing basic research to assess benefit-risk profiles of drugs, and to understand the mechanism of the optimal application of these drug profiles in pharmaceutical care. Major areas of research are pharmaco-epidemiology, drug utilisation (especially psychotropic drugs and hormones), drug information, and patient education, as well as studies in the field of psychotropic drugs and driving. The aims of the group are to generate and optimise dynamic databases and computational tools for the assessment of benefit-risk profiles of medicinal drugs, to implement these benefit-risk profiles of medicines in protocols for optimal pharmaceutical care in the health care setting using Information and Communication Technology, and to evaluate the effectiveness of these protocols in pharmaceutical care.
