Germany

The Institute for Legal Medicine Munich takes care of all courses in legal medicine at both Universities in Munich, the Ludwig-Maximilians University and the Technical University Munich. The staff, about 80 persons in total, comprises about 22 scientists and experts (physicians, pharma-cists and toxicologists, biologists, physicists and engineers).

Several research and service units cover all fields of legal and forensic medicine, including forensic toxicology, forensic biomechanics and accident research. The services include investigations and expertises for hospitals, courts, police, insurance companies, commercial and private clients and government authorities. Besides 2,500 legal autopsies, 15,000 reports and expertises are delivered per year. Due to its affiliation with the faculty of medicine the institute has access to all departments of the faculty including radiology (CT, MR, X-ray).

The department MBU (Medical Biomechanical Accident Analysis) has long experience with Data acquisition, reconstruction and analysis of fatal, seriously injured and minor injured car, pedestrian, motorcycle and truck accidents. The accidents can be reconstructed. Injury pattern and sources as well as Human Failure Patterns can be identified.

The Laboratory uses the latest analytic technologies and regularly analyses 5,000 drug samples per year.
