KfV - Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (Austrian Road Safety Board)

Austria

The Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KfV) (Austrian Road Safety Board) was founded in 1959 and is an institution organised on a private enterprise basis. Although the KfV works closely with the private insurance industry, for example the Austrian Association of Insurance Companies (VVO) and the Austrian Workers‘ Compensation Board, it is neither controlled nor influenced by them or political parties.

The KfV organises its diverse fields of activity into three departments:

  • Transport and Mobility,
  • Home, Leisure and Sports and
  • Property and Fire.

The KfV promote issues and offer their services in all regions of Austria through nine provincial offices. Fields within the Department of Transport and Mobility are the following: Road Safety Economics, Risk Management and Statistics, International Relations, Road Safety Management and Road User Behaviour. The KfV is well integrated in the decision making process of legislation and administration. It was involved in the major legal steps towards improving road safety in Austria. The KfV has also been involved in numerous projects of the 4th and 5th R&D Framework Programme (for example ESCAPE, GADGET, SARTRE, DAN, ANDREA, IMMORTAL, TREE, etc), other EU-projects, COST Actions and in a number of working groups at Commission level. It maintains close contacts with leading transport research institutes in Europe and is an active member of the international organisations FERSI and ETSC.
