The Road Traffic Safety Centre MTI carries out research work and conducts road safety educational and promotional activities. Road Traffic Safety Centre conducts scientific and research work in the following fields:

  • periodic statistical analyses (main problems, trends, comparisons to other countries),
  • profound analyses of selected road safety issues (for example speed, alcohol, young drivers, pedestrians),
  • monitoring and efficiency evaluation of measures meant to reduce road risks with respect to:
  • road engineering arrangements (for example passages through small towns and villages, residential areas, limited-speed zones, road signs),
  • legal regulations (for example regarding seatbelts, child restraint systems and airbags, speed limits),
  • organisational activities (for example Safe Road to School campaign, road safety improvement programmes).

EU research projects: for example SARTRE , BEST – BOB, ROSE 25, THE SEC - Safety belt (ETSC project).

As a co-ordinating institution under the responsibility of Poland, since 1997 the Centre has participated in the work conducted by the International Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD), and since 2003 in the work carried out by Community Road Accident Database (CARE).

The programme of Road Traffic Safety Centre comprises preparation of road safety improvement projects (nationwide, on a local basis, for example at the level of regions, districts, municipalities), road safety education (concepts of system-based solutions (models), educational projects, evaluation of projects and measures undertaken), close co-operation with groups of practicians who carry out training and examination of drivers - the ITS patronage over Driving School Centres, road safety training for teachers, driving instructors, examiners, local administration, road safety seminars, training and workshops, organisation of road safety events.

The Centre carries out its tasks in strict co-operation with the Parliament as well as central- and local-government institutions, and non-government organisations.
