The Directorate of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico, DGT) is under the Spanish Ministery of the Interior and performs the following main duties:
- management of all the aspects concerning the driving and traffic licences for all kind of vehicles, registrations and withdrawing of vehicles;
- establish the necessary regulations to open and maintain driving schools together with the issue of licences to professionally practice traffic education;
- report and sanction of offences against traffic and security regulations;
- vigilance and control of traffic in every kind of interurban motorways and cross-streets in co-ordination with the local authorities.
Concerning the traffic control activity in big cities, DGT is currently operating six traffic control centers in the following cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia, Zaragoza and Malaga.
DGT is a sponsoring partner in the FLUIDS project and the TRYS system being operated in Barcelona will serve as one of the two major validation sites.
