CPS-NILM - Centre of Post-Graduated Studies in Legal Medicine of the National Institute of Legal Medicine of Portugal

The National Institute of Legal Medicine is a public institute, endowed with corporate entity and administrative and financial autonomy, subject to the supervision and guardianship of the Minister of Justice. This institute is responsible for the co-ordination, guidance and supervision of all the country activities related with forensic expertises and other forensic activities, carrying through the forensic medicinal and expertises requested, as well as giving technician and specialized laboratorial support. It is, thus, responsible for all the organization and management of the legal and forensic medicine services in the national territory. On the other hand, it also has under its responsibility:

  • to foment programs of quality assurance applied to the legal medicine examinations and expertises and to promote the skilful harmonization of its methodologies, techniques and reports, emitting corresponding technician-scientific protocols;
  • to promote the formation, as well as the scientific inquiry and spreading in the scope of the legal medicine activity;
  • to serve public and private entities, as well as the particular ones in specific domains that may involve the application of legal medicine knowledge;
  • to assure the international joint with foreign similar entities and organizations.
