Consortium

Participants and Consortium

The consortium is comprised of a total of 37 partners from 19 States (18 EC Member States and Norway). As the majority of the participating institutions are members of FERSI they have a broad experience in drawing up and harmonising regulations and function as an adviser of their respective ministries.

DRUID involves a significant degree of complexity. Therefore it requires the integration of the best of European competence, knowledge, skills and experiences in the field of road safety research in order to reach the ambitious road safety targets set by the EU. This consortium represents a unique co-operation of experienced and multidisciplinary partners from a wide range of EU- and Non-EU-countries. Many of the members have worked together on previous EC-funded road safety research programmes and therefore the consortium has a well-demonstrated experience to undertake the tasks listed in the Work packages. Scientific excellence and competency of the partners is given by experience in road safety, engagement in the road safety community and by the numbers of projects undertaken in road safety research. Together the team provides the required broad range of skills.

The consortium is comprised of academic, research, medical and governmental institutions. This composition represents a range of expertise (for example medicine, physiology, pharmacology, toxicology, epidemiology, psychology, transportation science), involvement in related projects, and access to research facilities (for example medical laboratories, simulators, instrumented vehicles) relevant to the stated objectives. The size and competence of the consortium will ensure that there is sufficient critical mass in terms of scientific, technical and financial resources to achieve these objectives as well as to provide applicable recommendations for good practice and policy requirements within Europe.

Complementarity

DRUID’s structure has been specifically designed to ensure complementarity of the different approaches that are inherent in the project objectives. The different types or organisations to be involved in DRUID complement each other with their competence, experiences, knowledge and skills, many of the partners have well-established reputations as "Centres of Excellence". All members will be involved in roles where they have previously demonstrated competency and capabilities. The fact that the members of the consortium cover all geographical regions within the EU provides a powerful basis for a broad consensus.

Regular workshops will be held whereby each of the partners can discuss and present individual areas of activity so that they can be disseminated and integrated across the whole project to derive maximum exploitation of results. That complementarity is maintained throughout DRUID to derive timely and representative outcomes and implementation plans.

DRUID assembles a partnership that encompasses all of the necessary skills to obtain workable solutions, which will command broad support in the scientific world and the European Community.

Non-EU Participants

Two partners have been included from Norway (TOI, FHI) which is within the European Economic Area (EEA), whilst another institution is from Switzerland (bfu as subcontractor), a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
