Building Information Modeling (BIM) for bridges

In order to apply the BIM method in the maintenance management of bridge structures and to be able to use the BIM models throughout the lifecycle phases of design and construction including in operation, definitions and requirements that are placed on the BIM methodology for maintenance management must be established at an early stage.

The project aims to investigate the entire information lifecycle of a bridge structure and, in particular, consider the information required for operation and maintenance management. Identifying which information is relevant to common use cases and scenarios in maintenance management is essential. The relevant information is then mapped to the possible data sources. The focus is on practicality both in conservation management, which is usually the responsibility of public authorities, and in the information acquisition process, where different stakeholders are involved.

Over the past 15 years, various projects have conducted extensive research on the application of BIM in bridge construction. In particular, the publication of the IFC Bridge Standard represents significant progress. Nevertheless, concrete processes, standards as well as implementation strategies of the federal government are still missing.

Expert surveys regarding the information requirements and the implementation of use cases in maintenance management have led to the results that the scope of information required in the existing regulations is sufficient. However, the sources of information and the form of the information itself are not uniform and clear. From the surveys and analyses of the status quo in maintenance management, a concept has been developed consisting of a front end, i.e. the user interface of a BIM inventory management system, and a back end with the various data sources. The basic principles of the concept are that all information should be available in the backend and that all information must be available in a form that can be evaluated.

Regarding the linkage between documents and model elements, a link via a metadata concept or the deposit of links was considered helpful in handling. In doing so, the data is retained in its original form, thus ensuring long-term archiving.

In order to collect the information identified as necessary with as little effort as possible and make it available for operation, the terms as-built model and Digital Building Record were first defined. In the context of BIM-supported planning, it must be ensured for an as-built model that it corresponds to the built condition within the tolerances. For the introduction of BIM-supported maintenance management for existing bridges, the great challenge arises that data is often only available in limited digital form.

To create the Digital Building Record, Fusion-Data and Linked-Data approaches were investigated. The Linked-Data approach was pursued further. For the management of as-built models, the IFC 4x2 format is recommended.

For the use cases of structure inspection, recalculation, heavy transport, implementation of maintenance measures, the extension of the structure in the form of remodeling and expansion and the evaluation of network statistics, the influence of BIM, the use of the information and the resulting target processes in operation were designed. For this purpose, the implementation of the use cases via the frontend was presented based on a practiceoriented concept. The concept pursues the prerequisites of web-based software as a frontend that provides access to the Digital Building Record.

To demonstrate the developed concepts, the actual project BW 27/1 of the A99 is used to implement the BIM use cases of the maintenance management. Based on the attribute tables supplemented in the AIA, the attribution of the BIM models and the testing of the attributes were performed. Furthermore, the documents were parameterised based on the developed convention and linked to the data based on rules. Based on the resulting digital construction file, a software-specific demo was created to implement the use cases.

Based on the technologies encountered in the project, an outlook into future trends and developments is given. According to a study by Roland Berger, trends such as cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, sensor technology or smart buildings and smart cities will also have a decisive influence on the planning, construction and operation of the buildings of tomorrow.
