VBUS - A provisional method of calculating ambient noise from roads

Ambient noise is an increasing problem affecting more and more people especially in densely settled areas. In line with national legislation based on European directives, ambient noise generated by traffic and industrial facilities is to be registered on maps. This is to be followed by a planning of measures to reduce noise levels in cooperation with citizens.

Based on the RLS-90 guidelines developed for noise protection on roads and used to predict noise levels, the Federal Highway Research Institute has prepared a provisional method of calculating and rating ambient noise from roads (VBUS). The VBUS published in the Bundesanzeiger (federal gazette) dated 17th August 2006 is merely a provisional method pending implementation of a standardized, European-wide method for all transport media.

Prepared together with the VBUS were TEST-VBUS-2006 routines for testing computer programs. These routines provide software developers with simple examples for testing VBUS implementations.
