Fewer rear-end collisions on motorways due to Advanced Emergency Braking Systems for trucks

Rear end accidents of heavy trucks and buses on motorways often have a high severity in terms of damage or personal injuries. Advanced emergency braking systems (AEBS) can help to avoid these accidents or reduce the consequences. The European Commission therefore regulated that new trucks have to be equipped with such systems. Within a study, the Federal Highway Research Institute analyzed the effect of this obligation on traffic safety. It could be shown that AEBS have an impressive effectiveness. However, it also turned out that despite AEBS there still remain a high number of unavoided rear end accidents of trucks on motorways.
