Safety performance indicators: International experience
Safety performance indicators (SPI) are used to reflect changes in the level of safety in road traffic in a more differentiated way, complementing the established accident indicators. The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) initiated an analysis of safety performance indicators used in 24 countries. The study provides an important contribution to the further development of safety performance indicators in Germany.
The BASt has been regularly assessing SPIs since the 1970s. The results of the study conducted here provide a comprehensive basis for the development of further SPIs in the field of road safety for Germany. There are also many possibilities for further investigations, for example with regard to the implementation and monitoring of the development of road safety. The results are also used for current and planned BASt research projects for the development of further SPIs. These include, among others, the development of a methodology for recording driving under the influence of alcohol, the creation of the survey design for the infrastructure safety improvement potential, the recording of levels of use of safety-relevant assistance systems and automated driving functions as well as the perception of the traffic climate.
