Seniors: Safe driving thanks to targeted training

To maintain individual mobility, the car does not represent an unimportant means of transport for elderly people. However, since complex traffic situations, for instance, become more difficult to cope with as people get older, this causes senior citizens to feel insecure when driving, which can subsequently have a negative impact on their driving skills. The implementation of previously evaluated training measures to improve performance is on the one hand complex and on the other hand not offered everywhere. The Würzburg Institute for Traffic Sciences (WIVW) was therefore commissioned by the BASt to develop a short training programme that can be used on a large scale and that specifically addresses the needs of the individual person. The developed training concept proved to be effective within the framework of an evaluation study, so that the generalisability should be investigated in the next step. In addition, it should be examined how senior citizens can be motivated to participate voluntarily.
