Well prepared for the future: BASt develops concept for cross-modal life cycle management

The performance of the technical infrastructure is of central importance for competitiveness and social development. Due to the unsatisfactory condition of the infrastructure in Germany, there is an acute need for action, which cannot be overcome by higher investments alone. Therefore, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was commissioned to design a modular and indicator-based life cycle management (LZM). Decisions on when and where to take construction and maintenance measures should thus be made faster, more targeted and more comprehensible in the future. In order to exploit synergy effects, the concept will be equally applicable to the transport modes of rail, road and waterway. The concept was also evaluated in a pilot study.

There is now a good basis for life cycle management across all modes of transport. In the long term, this instrument can be used to ensure and control the performance and sustainable development of transport infrastructure systems. A further development that also includes the connection of existing rail, road and waterway systems is considered sensible.
