Further optimisation of winter road maintenance requires even more precise forecasts of road weather, which can more closely reflect the route-specific characteristics. The German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) therefore initiated an investigation into the extent to which the accuracy of forecasts can be increased under certain conditions. The results show that the use of mobile sensors with a newly developed data processing model leads to a minimization of forecast errors compared to previous methods.
