Service life prediction of concrete bridge structures

The design of the service life of concrete bridge structures is usually carried out based on a descriptive approach appropriate to exposure-dependent information on concrete composition, component geometry and design rules. However, a durability design of reinforced concrete structures can also be carried out on the basis of mathematical prediction models.

On commission by the Federal Highway Research Institute, the influence of model parameters of a probabilistically based durability model was investigated. The results provide knowledge on the calculation methods which may allow a transition from the current methods to a reliability-based method and future investigations can benefit from them..
