Avoiding glare: Requirements for dynamic headlamp levelling

Dynamic headlamp levelling is designed to prevent glare from oncoming road users. In order to ensure that the new system functions correctly and trouble-free, legal framework conditions are currently being developed. A catalogue of requirements drawn up on behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) is to serve as a basis for this. At the same time, it was examined how exactly garages comply with the headlamp adjustment rules and what improvements are required as a result. The results show that the vehicle inclination is influenced by a large number of parameters. Glare can only be reduced by mandatory application of dynamic headlamp levelling. It should be ensured that the required latency times are observed both in the unloaded and in the loaded state. The fact that workshop personnel are not always sufficiently qualified means that the statutory regulations on headlamp adjustment are hardly ever applied. The essential conditions for correct adjustment should be incorporated into the rules and regulations.
