Binder design for asphalt roads – Definition of a chemical rheological requirements profile

Slippery roads are a danger to road traffic and a challenge for road maintenance services. However, the use of de-icing salts in sensitive stretches of road is not considered to be appropriate and promising for the future because of its negative impact on the environment and infrastructure. As a possible alternative, heating of sections at risk of slipperiness is a viable option, as has already been implemented for individual bridges. On behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), the conditions have now been created to set up a true-to-scale demonstration section on the duraBASt with various investigation sections for temperature control of the road. The investigation forms the basis for the realization of a demonstrator for the tempered road on the duraBASt. In addition, the results are of great importance with regard to the future implementation of temperature-controlled road sections in the road network. Based on the impact analysis of the temperature control, the design of the system can be adapted to the prevailing conditions. Furthermore, the findings obtained in this way should in future lead to dimensioning recommendations for tempered road sections.
