Pilot application of a system for treatment of sewage from PWC parking areas

The treatment of sewage from toilets at PWC parking areas is more complex compared with household sewage primarily due to the high proportion of nitrogen and toilet paper. The aim is to offer a robust technology for remote locations which are not connected to a public sewage treatment plant. Design principles and new concepts for the treatment of this specific wastewater were developed in a research project commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). Two of these new concepts were tested under practical conditions by way of example of a planted soil filter: the separation of urine and the optimisation of the primary sedimentation.

The results of the pilot test show that for the future equipping of PWC parking areas with decentralised sewage treatment the new and relatively inexpensive concept of urine separation provides a solution to the problem of the special composition of the sewage. The operation of the decentralised sewage system is environmentally friendly, safe and low maintenance. These effects can be further enhanced by optimising the primary sedimentation.
