Motorcycle protective helmets - Identification of their optimization potential regarding statistics and characteristics of motorcycle accidents

The number of serious accidents involving motorcycles continues to be alarmingly high. The large number of riders who are severely injured and killed despite wearing protective helmets also gives great cause for concern. An analysis of accident data and injury patterns of motorcyclists in serious accidents has now been conducted for the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt).

The analysis of the accident situations with motorcyclists provides information on the necessary and practicable countermeasures to cut the high number of severely injured and killed accident victims. The project results offer clear findings which enable the safety effect of motorcycle protective helmets to be substantially improved in future. The recommendations produced should therefore be incorporated in a revision of the UN-R 22/05.
