Accidents of heavy goods vehicles
But not all types of HGV are similarly involved in accidents. These were the findings of research conducted by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) on accident trends for HGVs. Building on accident research from 2003, BASt analysed the accident occurrence involving HGVs and compiled a comprehensive status report.
Thus, in order to achieve a further reduction of accidents involving HGVs, it appears necessary to set different focal points for the four subcategories of this vehicle segment. The analysis identified three constellations which were compiled into scenarios and examined in detail: rear-end collisions, accidents at intersections, and lane-departure accidents. These three scenarios cover three quarters of all accidents involving HGVs. With a view to these three most common accident scenarios, measures for the prevention of accidents, e.g. driver assistance systems, show the greatest potential.
