Concentrations and loads of organic pollutants in highway runoff

Organic pollutants emitted from road traffic can reach the environment. A study on behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) has for the first time investigated which concentrations of relevant organic pollutants appear in highway runoff. A higher level of measurement accuracy is achieved with the particle-bound substances investigated due to the separate analysis of water and sediments. The high share of samples taken of between 61 and 82 per cent of the annual runoff permits concentration and load to be reliably recorded. The retention of fine particles is particularly important for the cleaning of highway runoff due to the high share of particles in the pollutants investigated. Drainage methods which achieve adequate cleaning of the runoff for heavy metals are also suitable for the organic pollutants investigated. The handling of highway runoff which has so far been addressed in the regulations can be maintained in principle. Reference will be made to the results of the study in the rules and regulations on road drainage in the future.
