Economic efficiency assessment of special parking strategies to increase HGV parking capacity on motorways

The existing parking space for HGVs along German motorways does not meet current demand. In addition to the building of new service stations, and the conversion or expansion of existing ones, special intelligent parking strategies, such as compact parking, come into consideration to increase parking capacity. So far studies have focused on the technical aspects of the special parking strategies. Commissioned by BASt, PTV Transport Consult GmbH has now investigated the framework conditions for an increase in capacity at service stations, conducting a systematic verification. The objective was to develop a method for an economic efficiency assessment of the special parking strategies compared with conventional extension measures.

Currently, the decision in favour of a conventional or special parking strategy will always depend on the individual case. However, the results of the study for the first time permit special and conventional parking strategies to be assessed and compared in terms of their economic efficiency in accordance with a formalised procedure. Since only little experience is so far available with the special parking strategies, the suitability of the assessment tool will become evident only in broader practical use.
