Vehicle safety systems in passenger cars 2017

Safety systems integrated into passenger cars play an important role in preventing traffic accidents and mitigating their consequences. Following similar surveys in 2013 and 2015, the market penetration of vehicle safety systems was also investigated in 2017 on behalf of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). This study provided a comprehensive overview of the market penetration of vehicle safety systems. The comparison between 2013 and 2017 shows that the vehicle population has higher equipment rates than four years earlier. This is particularly true for the off-road vehicle and SUV segment with a high proportion of new, well-equipped vehicles. Minis and small cars, on the other hand, are equipped with significantly fewer systems than vehicles in the upper mid-range and luxury class. Vehicle safety equipment decreases with vehicle age as well as with decreasing annual mileage and less frequent use.
